Digital ID Foundations: Inclusive ID Ecosystems, Civil Registration and Base Registries, and Business ID
About this course
Digital identity is the foundation of modern digital public services, yet millions of people and businesses across Africa remain unregistered or unable to prove who they are. Without a trusted, inclusive ID ecosystem, citizens struggle to access health, education, social protection, and financial services, and enterprises struggle to formalize, trade, and compete. This webinar introduces the core building blocks of a functional digital ID ecosystem and shows how they connect. Participants will explore how inclusive design ensures no one is left behind, including women, rural communities, persons with disabilities, and displaced populations. The session examines the role of civil registration (births, deaths, marriages) as the authoritative source of legal identity, and how well-governed base registries create a single source of truth that other systems can reliably draw on. It also looks at business ID, and how verified business identities can streamline registration, licensing, procurement, and cross-border trade. Through expert insights and practical country examples, attendees will gain a clear view of the policy, technical, and institutional foundations needed to build interoperable, trusted, and inclusive digital ID systems.
