Welcome to your course on AI in the Healthcare System!

This course is designed for senior health officials, policymakers, and health-system leaders who want to govern artificial intelligence in healthcare responsibly. Most health AI initiatives stall not because the algorithm is weak, but because the tool was never validated on the populations it is meant to serve, or because the connectivity, devices, and trained staff to run it were never in place. This course flips that around: it starts with the realities of African health systems, where Sub-Saharan Africa carries 25 percent of the global disease burden with only 3 percent of the world's health workers, and treats AI as a tool to be governed, not a promise to be trusted.

The curriculum introduces the foundations of AI in healthcare and the terminology you need to ask the right questions, then works through four major application domains (diagnostics, medical imaging, predictive analytics, and robotic surgery) and six real case studies from Africa and beyond. You will then confront the practical and ethical challenges of data quality, algorithmic bias, informed consent, and accountability, before mapping the long-term future of AI in African health systems.

By mastering these concepts, you will be equipped to assess, govern, and lead the responsible adoption of AI in your own health system, keeping the clinician in charge and the patient at the centre.
