This course is designed for African government officials, policy advisers, and public-sector decision-makers who want to lead on artificial intelligence rather than react to it. Most AI initiatives in government fail not because the technology was wrong, but because the strategy skipped the groundwork: a strong vision with no readiness baseline, no funding plan, and no honest reckoning with risk. This course flips that around. It treats AI as one tool among many, grounds every decision in real African contexts, and gives you the frameworks to move from buzzword to briefing note with confidence.

The curriculum begins with what makes AI genuinely different from earlier technology through its six core features, then shows where AI can accelerate development against Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals, and under what digital-readiness conditions. You will then design the components of a national AI strategy using a five-step strategy cascade and six adoption principles, before evaluating real sector applications across health, agriculture, education, finance, justice, and administration with a two-axis risk framework and a five-question procurement checklist.

By mastering these concepts, you will be equipped to distinguish genuine AI capability from vendor hype, design a defensible national AI strategy, classify any proposed application by its risk to citizens, and write a structured AI briefing note ready for a Cabinet decision in your own country context.
