5G and Broadband Connectivity in Africa
About this course
Welcome to your course on 5G and Broadband Connectivity in Africa!
Broadband is the infrastructure layer beneath every digital ambition Africa holds: e-government, digital health, smart agriculture, financial inclusion, and industrial competitiveness. This course examines 5G and broadband connectivity from the ground up: the technology, the policy frameworks, the economics of deployment, and the regulatory decisions that either unlock or block progress. You will engage with the real deployment challenges facing African operators and regulators, and leave with a structured vocabulary for arguing for the investments that close the connectivity gap.
You will trace the evolution from analogue 1G to 5G New Radio, learn the ITU IMT-2020 standard and its three use scenarios (eMBB, mMTC, URLLC), and understand why the coverage and usage gaps in Africa require different policy instruments. Five modules build on each other, finishing with a ten-question final assessment.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the technical fundamentals of 5G and broadband technologies and how they differ from earlier generations.
- Analyse Africa's connectivity gap and evaluate the economic case for accelerating broadband rollout.
- Assess the policy and regulatory levers that shape spectrum allocation, infrastructure sharing, and universal access.
- Design a broadband deployment strategy for a specific national or regional context using a structured framework.
- Evaluate implementation challenges and formulate mitigation strategies for underserved and rural contexts.
