Welcome to your course on 5G and Broadband Connectivity in Africa!

Broadband is the infrastructure layer beneath every digital ambition Africa holds: e-government, digital health, smart agriculture, financial inclusion, and industrial competitiveness. This course examines 5G and broadband connectivity from the ground up: the technology, the policy frameworks, the economics of deployment, and the regulatory decisions that either unlock or block progress. You will engage with the real deployment challenges facing African operators and regulators, and leave with a structured vocabulary for arguing for the investments that close the connectivity gap.

You will trace the evolution from analogue 1G to 5G New Radio, learn the ITU IMT-2020 standard and its three use scenarios (eMBB, mMTC, URLLC), and understand why the coverage and usage gaps in Africa require different policy instruments. Five modules build on each other, finishing with a ten-question final assessment.
